Synopsis: Many medications very commonly used in the US can have serious interactions with nutrition that can affect drug safety and alter requirements for particular nutrients. Often these interactions are unrecognized or only newly recognized. This presentation is designed to help health professionals recognize the problems, raise awareness of this issue, and be able to suggest nutrition adjustments to minimize negative outcomes associated with drug/nutrient interactions. Specific medications discussed are:

  1. Anti-Seizure/Epilepsy Medications
  2. Stomach Acid Blockers (PPIs) for Hyperacidity or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
  3. Diabetes Medication: Metformin (Glucophage).

Objectives:

  1. Identify important nutritional implications (including newly recognized interactions), and
  2. Describe appropriate nutrition interventions to minimize problems for each of the following classes of commonly used medications:
    1. Anti-Seizure/Epilepsy Medications
    2. Stomach Acid Blockers (PPIs) for Hyperacidity or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
    3. Diabetes Medication: Metformin (Glucophage)

CPE level: Level 2: General knowledge of the literature and professional practice in areas covered.
